Synopsis
This exclusive private tour is a unique experience to savour in a day. Visit the Fagradalsfjall volcano and pick up a small souvenir to take home of cooled down lava while walking on a bridge that connects two continents. The dormant tectonic activity makes for a geologist’s dream of hot springs and half-riven columns of igneous rock as old as the island itself. Additional bonuses include visiting a lighthouse built in the 1800’s and eating at a local restaurant (with brilliant fish options!).
Tour description
The day starts with a pickup from your hotel and a drive up to the beautiful Kleifarvatn lake, against the backdrop of volcanic peaks and a couple of steaming hot springs. A panorama to make Heimdall, guard of the bi-frost, jealous awaits you at the shores of this earthly marvel.
Read MoreNext stop is the Seltún geothermal area at Krýsuvík where we can enjoy a leisurely stroll amidst a field of colourful mineral pools, unless you get close to the steamy vapours to hurry you up a bit (you’ll understand when you visit).
We then head on to Fagradalsfjall to see the only currently erupting volcano in the world! Witness a sight straight out of Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs as rivers of molten rock straight from the mantle flow across the ash-ridden plain. Next on the list is a geothermal wonder of Iceland, the Gunnuvher hot springs, to warm up you up.
This is followed by taking a scenic drive along the coastline passing by the lighthouse of Reykjanesviti to reach the Valahnjúkur cliffs where Will Ferrell’s movie, ‘Eurovision song contest’, was filmed.
What better way to end the day than take a walk on a bridge that literally welds continents together at Midlina, a steel footbridge set over the yawning fissure overlooking the tectonic plates of North America and Eurasia. The bridge was built as a symbol for the connection between Europe and North America. We then drop you back at your hotel filled with memories of a day to remember for life.
