Tour description
Jules Verne picked it for ‘gateway to the centre of the Earth’, and you must experience it to know why. Snæfellsness peninsula has inspired many artists and writers. She has enthralled every single traveller who has taken the time to woo her.
We pick you up from your hotel in Reykjavík for this unique private tour experience and take you to western Iceland and we will pass through Borganes (known as Digranes in Egils Saga). We then head to the beautiful basalt columns of Gerðuberg with about a 30-minute drive and the pass by a 4000-year-old lava field slightly west of Mt. Helga called a Berserkjahraun (Beserker lava field).
Read MoreThen comes the scenic drive to a stop near Mt.Kirkjufell (“arrow mountain” in GoT)- witness towering cliffs, scenic waterfalls and quaint little fishing villages along the way which makes you wonder if you are driving down the rabbit hole in wonderland. Don’t worry, there are no evil queens or witches here, assuming you did not bring your mother-in-law along with you on the tour (j/k mothers-in-law, gulp!). The Kirkjufell waterfall can be the backdrop of a click here which will make quite a picture on your wall.
Next to the Snæfellsjökull national park we rendezvous with the magical glacier adorning the Snæfellsjökull active volcano like a crown. In theory, the volcano is an entryway straight to the Earth’s core and the towering summit is visible all the way from Reykjavík.
Halfway through the tour we come across Djúpalónssandur known for pristine black pebbled beaches and iron artefacts from fishing trawlers almost 8 decades ago. Then we pass by the spectacular gigantic pair natural pillars of Lóndrangar in Hellnar and have a pitstop at Gestastofan á Malariffi and you can either visit the museum or the lighthouse here for an enriching cultural bonus.
Then we roll on to Arnarstapi village with a backdrop of towering cliffs and the coastline and is quite a breathtaking view to say the least and the cliffs are an ornithologist’s dream, rich in an undisturbed echo system for various sea birds.
Then before we call it a day, we get to visit Búðakirkja a tiny black wooden church which dates to the 18th century popular among the locals for weddings and special occasions.
When the day was a sumptuous meal for the eyes, we need to top it off with a fine dessert, and that is what we have for you at Ytri Tunga where seal colonies are known to frequent and hopefully we get to see one and head back home with memories of a day to remember and tales to be told which makes you the centrepiece of gatherings.
